Proficiency Ribbons

Goliath Historical Fencing Academy uses a highly systematized theoretical framework for employing the tactical theory contained within the historical fencing manuscripts/manuals we study. The system, developed from the Kunst Des Fechtens of the Late Medieval and Early Modern HRE, has gained some notoriety by many within the larger historical fencing community. Colored ribbons represent levels of proficiency within the system. Unlike organizational ranks, these ribbons are purely a reflection of knowledge, and proficiency in skills within the system we employ. They are open to anybody who wishes to test for them, however training with Goliath Historical Fencing Academy is highly encouraged, if not necessary to pass. The hierarchy of ribbons is:

Black - Highest level of proficiency. (expected time to obtain a black ribbon is 3 years after obtaining your brown ribbon)

Brown - Demonstrates an exceptionally high level of understanding of the system as a whole. Can flow seamlessly in and out of distances according to the general rules and iron laws, using the appropriate techniques at the appropriate times. Can apply the theory across armed and unarmed combative environments. Understands how to adjust tactics based on the particular features of the weapon or combative environment. (Expected time to achieve a brown ribbon is 2 years after you achieve your gray ribbon)

Gray - Intermediate level proficiency. Demonstrates a strong understanding of the core actions, can demonstrate basic variation in the way and reasons each action may be performed. Can set up situations in which each action can be employed. Can chain multiple actions together in sequence. Understands the iron laws and general rules of fencing theory. (Expected time to achieve a gray ribbon is 3 years after you receive your indigo ribbon)

Indigo - Basic level proficiency. Can demonstrate a theoretical understanding, and physical proficiency in a core selection of actions. Can define such actions in terms of their qualities (Strong/Weak, Long/Short, Provoker/Taker/Hitter, etc…), the distances such actions can be employed (Prefencing, Middle/War/Handworks), and a selection of tactical milestones to be achieved as an engagement progresses through distances using such actions (Seeking, enhancing, spending, ceding advantage). Can demonstrate the fundamental body mechanics of power generation and structure. (Expected time to achieve an indigo ribbon is 2 years)
